A Marvel of Nature

Nestled between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the power and beauty of Mother Nature. Spanning over 1.7 kilometers in width and plunging to depths of 108 meters. During the wet season over 500 million liters of water flow over the Victoria Falls per minute at a speed of 1088m3 per second. The falls create an ethereal spectacle of cascading water, enveloped in mist and rainbows. It is no wonder that Victoria Falls has earned the title “The Smoke That Thunders.”

Victoria Falls Moon Bow

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the only two places on earth to experience “Moonbows,” a lunar rainbow that appears whenever the full moon lights hit the waterfall. A moonbow (sometimes known as a Lunar Rainbow) is an optical phenomenon caused when the light from the moon is refracted through water droplets in the air. The amount of light available even from the brightest full moon is far less than that produced by the sun so moonbows are incredibly faint and very rarely seen. The only other place that one can see this very rare phenomenon is at Cumberland Falls near Corbin, Kentucky USA.

The Discovery and Naming

Victoria Falls owes its name to the intrepid explorer, David Livingstone, who first encountered this natural wonder in 1855. Inspired by his queen, Livingstone named the falls after the reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. known locally as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” meaning “The Smoke That Thunders,” Victoria Falls is deeply rooted in the rich African heritage and offers a glimpse into the continent’s captivating history.

Seven Natural Wonders of the World

Victoria Falls is one of the World’s Seven Natural Wonders.  The other six World Natural Wonders are the Aurora Borealis, the Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon, Mount Everest, Paricutin, and the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro.

Victoria Falls Gorges

Victoria Falls is home to numerous beautiful gorges. The main ones are the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Gorges. Another gorge not to miss during a visit to Victoria Falls is the Songwe Gorge, which got its name from the Songwe River, gushing in between from the north side of the Great Falls.

Experiencing the Majesty

A visit to Victoria Falls promises an unforgettable experience. As you approach, the thunderous sound of rushing water fills the air, heightening anticipation. The falls reveal themselves in all their glory, casting a mesmerizing spell on all who witness them. Marvel at the colossal volume of water as it plummets into the gorge below, creating an immersive spectacle that touches the soul.

The Best Time to Visit

To make the most of your visit, timing is key. The dry season, from May to October, offers excellent visibility and allows you to witness the falls in their full splendor. However, during the rainy season, from November to April, the falls swell to their maximum capacity, exuding an even greater sense of power and might. During the rainy season, the Victoria Falls Rain Forest takes on a new meaning. Each season has its unique charm, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences, just another reason why you have to visit Victoria Falls twice, during different seasons to experience its true majesty.

Is Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Zambia?

Victoria Falls is part of the mighty Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The falls straddle Zimbabwe to the west and Zambia to the east and are easily accessed from either country via Victoria Falls Town in Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia. The two countries were connected by a bridge in 1905. It carries vehicle, train, and foot traffic. Victoria Falls Bridge is 156 meters long.
